OpenA officially launched the Linux preview version of the ChatGPT desktop application, integrating the three major functions of ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work and Codex into the same window, covering Ubuntu, Debian and Fedora Three major mainstream distributions. OpenAI said that Linux has always been one of the most popular platforms for desktop applications. This release marks the last piece of the puzzle for its desktop product line after macOS and Windows. The application is provided in the form of DEB and RPM installation packages, supporting x64 and ARM64 architectures. The software repository will be automatically added during installation, and can be updated normally through the system package manager. Officially supported distributions include Ubuntu 24.04 and 26.04 LTS, Debian 13, and Fedora 43 and 44. Since these versions are the basis for numerous downstream distributions and derivatives, the actual compatibility range may be wider than the official list. Previously, Linux users could only use ChatGPT through a browser or run the open source Codex command line tool. Now the dedicated application integrates the three products. In particular, Codex can directly open local warehouses, edit files, read git history and run commands on the machine without uploading files to the cloud. This is the core reason why developers have long called for native clients. Developers’ battle: The operating system has become the new frontline of AI competition. OpenAI was released a step later than Anthropic - about a month ago, Anthropic had taken the lead in launching the Linux version of the Claude desktop application, supporting Ubuntu 22.04 and higher and Debian 12 and higher. The back-and-forth layout of the two companies reveals the competitive direction of desktop AI products: simply chatting with a browser tab is enough, but an agent that needs to check the code warehouse, execute terminal commands, and operate local files must have a resident application with clear system permissions as a carrier. Operating system support has therefore become a key battleground for developer users. However, the Linux preview version has not yet fully aligned with the macOS and Windows versions. Voice for Work voice features and the built-in browser are still marked as macOS and Windows exclusive capabilities.
