OpenAI releases GPT-5.6 today, opening a new chapter for ChatGPT

OpenAI held its second live broadcast event today, announcing at 10 a.m. (Pacific time) that ChatGPT has entered the next chapter and officially released the GPT-5.6 series models. The company has previously teased the integration of Codex workflows into the main application, and today's event further demonstrates the direction in which the two will be integrated. Three models of GPT-5.6 are available. OpenAI first announced the three models of GPT-5.6 at the end of June, and they are officially open for download today. Sol is the flagship model, designed for difficult tasks; Terra is a balanced model suitable for daily work efficiency; Luna is a fast and low-cost model that meets lightweight needs. The three models adopt a new naming method. The numbers represent generations, while Sol, Terra, and Luna mark different capability levels and evolve independently, allowing users and developers to more clearly choose based on intelligence, speed, and cost. Live demonstration and future outlook OpenAI introduced the practical applications of the new versions of ChatGPT and GPT-5.6 in the live broadcast. Engineers including Andrew Ambrosino, Jessica Liang, Ed Bayes, Lauren Gordon, Tejal Patwardhan and Katy Shi demonstrated with host Thibault Sottiaux. The video trailer shows that ChatGPT is further integrated with Codex, indicating that in the future developers will be able to execute coding workflows directly in the conversational interface.
