Google Assistant will exit Android and Wear OS in September and will be fully replaced by Gemini

Google has officially confirmed that the Google Assistant will be retired from mobile devices in 2026, with a September 4th end-of-service date set for Android. Google sent an email to existing users stating that Google Assistant will be discontinued and Gemini, a new generation of AI-powered assistant, has become the assistant experience on Android. Removal of Google Begins on September 4th Access to the Google Assistant will begin to be removed on September 4th, but the entire process may take several weeks to reach all users. Once access is removed, users will not be able to use Google Assistant on their phones, tablets or paired devices, nor will they be able to switch back to the old assistant. Beyond mobile phones, this suspension also applies to Wear OS watches, headphones, and cars that project Android Auto through users' mobile devices. As for cars with built-in Google functionality, the Google Assistant will continue to work after September 4, 2026. Follow-up arrangements for other devices Google said that Gemini will be available on Google TV devices, Google Home speakers and smart screens, but this announcement is not applicable to other device categories for the time being; it remains to be seen when the Pixel Tablet connected to the base will get Gemini. Google also said it will ensure a smooth transition and believes Gemini will provide a more powerful and useful Assistant experience. This deactivation plan was originally scheduled to be implemented at the end of 2025, but was later extended to 2026; currently, the Gemini application still retains the "Switch to Google Assistant" option.
