Google announced that users can now remove visible watermarks from images, videos and music generated with AI tools. After the update, users can turn off the new "Media watermark" setting in the AI video generator Flow of Gemini and Google. Turn off visible watermark When the "Media watermark" setting is turned off, Google will remove the "flash" watermark that appears in the lower right corner of the generated content of Nano Banana and Omni models. Invisible markup SynthID remains Although the visible watermark becomes optional, AI-generated content will still have an invisible SynthID watermark and C2PA metadata embedded in the background. Josh Woodward, vice president of Google Labs, Gemini and AI Studio, said users can still confirm whether content has these tags by asking Gemini or Google to search. Industry Trends and Future Plans This change may make it more difficult for users to quickly identify whether an image or video is generated by AI, but many users have already removed the visible watermark on their own. Other AI image generators, such as OpenAI and Meta's products, do not add visible watermarks; OpenAI relies on SynthID and C2PA to mark AI content, while Meta has launched its own Content Seal standard. Anthropic also announced this week that it will add invisible watermarks to AI-generated text and images. Google plans to expand this new setting to Google searches later, but it will not be rolled out in countries where visible watermarks are mandatory.
