ChatGPT for Mac joins the voluntary enablement of Computer History function to replace Chronicle

OpenAI adds Computer History functionality to the ChatGPT desktop application, replacing the earlier Chronicle research preview. This feature is turned off by default and users need to enable it themselves and control which applications and websites can contribute records. Computer History turns a user's activities on the Mac into memories and timelines for use with ChatGPT and Codex. How Features Work Computer History is different from Chronicle. Chronicle relies on screenshots, while Computer History records interaction events exposed through macOS accessibility features, including clicks, typing, keyboard shortcuts, and switching applications. Users can ask what they were doing before the interruption, find recently viewed files, or generate daily work summaries. ChatGPT may also suggest converting repetitive workflows into skills or automation. Privacy & Control Computer History does not capture screenshots, screen recordings, microphone input, or system audio, and private browsing activity is excluded. Users can view timeline items from settings, display individual memory files in the Finder, delete specific items, or clear activity from the past 10 minutes, an hour, a day, or all time. Interaction events are temporarily stored on Mac for up to 48 hours and processed by the OpenAI server to generate memories. They will not be retained after processing and will not be used for training. The generated plain text memory file will remain local until deleted. Availability and Risks Computer History is available to ChatGPT Pro, Business and Enterprise users. Business and Enterprise administrators must enable access before workspace members can open it. Initially, the European Economic Area (EEA), Switzerland and the UK will not be covered.
