Anthropic launches Claude Opus 5, said to be close to half the price of Fable 5

2 min read
Anthropic officially released the latest large-scale AI model Claude Opus 5 today, about two months after the previous generation Opus 4.8. The company notes that the Opus 5 is close in performance to its most powerful model, the Fable 5, but is half the price and is designed to be a preset model for everyday use. Price and Availability Claude Opus 5 is available on all platforms starting today, priced the same as Opus 4.8: $5 per million input tokens and $25 per million output tokens. Anthropic says Opus 5 will be the preset model on the Claude Max and the most powerful option on the Claude Pro. New features and improvements In addition to model upgrades, Anthropic simultaneously launches two platform updates: tool changes in the conversation (allowing developers to switch the tools used by Claude during the conversation without affecting the prompt cache), and API automatic fallback function (when the request is intercepted by the security classifier, it can automatically go to other available models to avoid the request being blocked). Anthropic describes the Opus 5 as a "thoughtful and proactive" model with a level of intelligence close to that of the Fable 5, which was previously delayed due to security concerns. The Fable 5 remains Anthropic's most capable model yet, while the Opus 5 offers close performance at a more affordable price.
