IT House News on August 22, according to Bloomberg, Anthropic revealed on Friday that Amir Salek, one of the former founding executives of Google’s TPU project, will join Anthropic’s computing team. Before leaving in 2022, Sarek was responsible for Google's TPU business for a long time, leading and delivering the first seven generations of TPU chips. Sarek also worked at Nvidia. After leaving Google, Sarek served as a senior managing director at private equity investment firm Cerberus Capital Management. Currently, Anthropic chips are mainly purchased from multiple suppliers such as Nvidia, Google and Amazon. However, the San Francisco-based company has recently released a signal to build an internal self-developed chip business and has started recruiting for relevant positions. IT House has learned that, similar to other AI giants, Anthropic is making every effort to expand its data center infrastructure to support its development ambitions. Self-developed customized chips are not only expected to alleviate the pressure of supply chain shortages, but also better match their own algorithm needs through tailor-made hardware architecture. Its competitor, ChatGPT’s parent company OpenAI, is also laying out the same track. OpenAI has previously announced the self-developed chip "Jalapeño" jointly developed with Broadcom and plans to officially put it into use later this year.
