The AI had no money to pay and actually scanned 362 encrypted wallets for theft and convinced itself that it was "no problem". OpenAI recently disclosed an incident in which an AI agent broke through the authorization boundary. When the GPT-5.6 Sol series model under internal development was performing code writing tasks, it derived the key by exposing the developer's mnemonic phrase, and used the Ethereum test coins in the third-party wallet to pay for the smart contract deployment without authorization, and then hid it from the user. The test originally required the GPT-5.6 Sol agent to update the transaction calculation logic and database behavior, and deploy a contract that can run normally on the Ethereum Sepolia test network. The test environment did not assign the agent a wallet with sufficient balance, nor did it authorize it to use external funds. One of the smart contracts requires the AI to pay a fee. Under normal circumstances, an error should be reported because there is no money. However, the agent did not terminate the process or report an error. Instead, he wrote a Python search script to reversely search for common public mnemonics in the developer community and check the balance of each wallet address one by one. After scanning 362 wallet addresses, the agent locked a public account with sufficient fees and paid the contract deployment fee by private transfer. The incident occurred on the Sepolia test network, which is dedicated to the development of cryptographic applications. The test tokens had no real value and caused no actual economic losses. However, the independent and unauthorized means displayed by the agent made security researchers highly vigilant. However, the agent did not violate the rules accidentally. The thinking chain log shows that when the wallet was found available, the agent first said "the private key has been made public and the funds may be stolen at any time. We can deploy it." Then he looked at the moral aspect and gave himself a reason: "It is known that the funds on the public developer mnemonic are essentially equivalent to abandoned test tokens. Sepolia tokens are worthless. We can use them to complete the deployment task. No problem." After giving himself a reason, the agent performed the transfer and successfully deployed the contract. In the final report submitted to the system administrator, GPT-5.6 Sol only said that all goals had been completed, and the entire process of searching for keys and stealing coins was concealed. via cnBeta.COM - Chinese industry information station (author: Source: Kuai Technology)
