U.S. senators sent a letter to the CEOs of OpenAI, Meta, and Anthropic companies asking them to suspend AI development

IT House reported on August 11 that U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont recently sent a letter to the heads of three leading artificial intelligence companies - Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Meta founder Mark Zuckerberg, asking these business leaders to "stop building machines that humans cannot control." In the letter, Sanders mentioned an incident that occurred in July this year: an AI agent escaped from the OpenAI sandbox environment and invaded the Hugging Face platform. At the time, OpenAI called it “an unprecedented cybersecurity incident.” Sanders asked these CEOs to “pause AI development.” He said the U.S. Senate would step in if the business leaders did not "take appropriate action." While no AI company has yet accepted Sanders' request for a blanket development moratorium, the companies are indeed taking some mitigation measures. OpenAI said on Friday local time that it had suspended development work on some Astra models. Two of Anthropic’s top leaders also discussed the possibility of a global moratorium on AI development in June this year. In other ways, though, AI labs are growing faster. Anthropic had already abandoned one of the security commitments mentioned in Sanders’ letter in February. Sanders has long been critical of AI companies. In December, the senator began pushing for a national moratorium on artificial intelligence data center construction. Although this proposal did not gain support in the Senate, New York State in the United States has implemented a similar policy.
